For DC, we usually recommend 2nd Day Air. It reliably arrives a day earlier than Ground, carries the live arrival guarantee, and the price difference is modest. Ground works in moderate months, but 2nd Day Air is the safer default.
DC Climate: Middle Ground, Both Directions
DC's climate profile is the textbook middle of our shipping map. Winters are mild to moderate. You'll get cold snaps and the occasional ice storm, but not the sustained sub-zero cold that forces us to hold Midwest orders. We use 72-hour heat packs for DC winter orders from mid-November through mid-March, and weather-related holds are rare.
Summer is the more significant challenge. DC's July and August humidity is punishing, the heat-index regularly pushes well above 100°F, and package-in-truck temperatures follow. From late May through early September, DC orders ship with cool packs, and we often recommend 2nd Day Air or Next Day Air over Ground during a heat wave. DC summer transit risk is lower than Charlotte or Jacksonville, but higher than Chicago or Minneapolis.
What DC Keepers Order
DC order mix is broad and sophisticated. Bearded dragons and leopard geckos drive volume as everywhere, but we see a larger-than-average share of chameleon and dart frog keepers in our DC orders. Species that benefit particularly from high-calcium silkworms as a staple feeder. We also see steady hornworm demand from Alexandria, Arlington, and Bethesda, with a notable contingent of military-affiliated keepers who got into the hobby during deployments and kept it up after.

The DC metro has a handful of strong independent reptile shops, and if yours stocks fresh hornworms, support them. But for mid-week ordering or bulk weekly feedings, shipping direct from our breeding room is a shorter path to fresh cups than retail. Our price per worm is lower, our worms are bigger, and they were packed the same week you're feeding them.

Do you ship to Maryland and Northern Virginia suburbs?
Yes. Montgomery, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun counties are all in our routine routing. Transit times match DC proper.
What about federal building delivery quirks?
We don't ship to federal addresses by default. If you work in a federal building, use a home or business address. Federal mailrooms are not set up for live animal receiving.
