Hornworms & Silkworms for Sale Near Philadelphia, PA | Pioneer Feeders

Philadelphia is a 2 to 3 day Ground trip from our Michigan facility. Far enough that we take packing seriously on every Philly order, close enough that we can land a Next Day Air in your hand on any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday if you want it. Philly sits in a sweet spot for serious reptile keepers: an active regional hobby scene, a strong show circuit within a couple hours in any direction, and moderate climate that makes shipping live feeders much less dramatic than New York or Boston.

Philly's Reptile Scene Runs Deep

The Philadelphia Herpetological Society is one of the oldest continuously active herp organizations in the United States. It's been around since the 1940s, which predates most state herpetological societies by decades. The Havoc Reptile Shows rotate through Hamburg, PA and neighboring Pennsylvania venues several times a year, drawing vendors and keepers from the entire Mid-Atlantic. Combined with the Academy of Natural Sciences' long herpetology tradition and the steady flow of PA, NJ, and Delaware keepers through the regional show circuit, Philadelphia is one of the strongest east-coast reptile markets outside NYC.

Shipping From Michigan to Philadelphia

Philly is in UPS Zone 5 from our facility, a 2 to 3 business day Ground trip.

  • UPS Ground: 2 to 3 business days, from $6.67
  • UPS 2nd Day Air: 2 business days, from $12.81, Live Arrival Guarantee
  • UPS Next Day Air: 1 business day, from $24.44, Live Arrival Guarantee

For Philadelphia, we usually recommend 2nd Day Air as the sweet-spot choice. It arrives a full day earlier than Ground, carries the live arrival guarantee, and doesn't cost much more than Ground. The math clearly favors it for any order over a single cup.

Climate Is On Philly's Side

Philadelphia has one of the most forgiving climate profiles for live-feeder shipping on the entire East Coast. Winters are real but rarely brutal. You'll get cold snaps and the occasional nor'easter, but you don't deal with the sustained sub-zero stretches that plague Chicago or the lake-effect chaos of Buffalo. We use 72-hour heat packs for Philly orders from mid-November through mid-March, and we rarely have to proactively hold a Philadelphia order for weather.

Summers are hot and humid, and July and August can get uncomfortable. The Philly heat is less extreme than Southern markets like Charlotte or Jacksonville. From late May through early September we ship with cool packs, and 2nd Day Air is usually enough to outrun transit heat.

What Philly Keepers Order

The Philly order pattern tilts toward experienced keepers with mixed collections. Folks running bearded dragons alongside monitors, chameleons, or dart frog vivariums. Silkworms in particular are strong in the Philly mix; we ship more silkworm volume to Philadelphia per capita than almost any other East Coast metro, largely to keepers running specialty species that appreciate the soft body and calcium loading. Hornworms come second but still strong, driven by beardie and chameleon keepers.

Philly Pet Store vs. Direct Shipping

There are a handful of great independent reptile shops in Philly and the surrounding Bucks, Chester, and Delaware County areas. If your local carries fresh feeders, support them. But if you're running a mid-to-large collection or ordering mid-week for weekend feedings, ordering direct from our breeding room is the shorter path to fresh cups, and usually cheaper per worm than retail.

Wholesale for Philadelphia Area Shops

If you run a reptile shop in Philly, the main line suburbs, South Jersey, or Delaware, we'd love to set up a wholesale account. We already supply several shops in the Mid-Atlantic on a weekly schedule. Most Philly wholesale accounts run Monday 2nd Day Air shipments landing Wednesday, so cups hit the shelf exactly in time for the Friday and Saturday rush.

Philadelphia FAQ

Ground or 2nd Day Air for Philly?

2nd Day Air, almost always. It's one day faster, it's guaranteed, and the cost difference is small enough that the math clearly favors it for anything past a single cup.

Do you ship to the Philly suburbs and South Jersey?

Yes. Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, Delaware counties in PA, plus Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester in South Jersey. All inside our standard Philadelphia routing.

What about Pittsburgh and the rest of PA?

Pittsburgh adds a day of transit. We ship there regularly, with the same routing logic but a slightly longer window.
