Hornworms & Silkworms for Sale Near New York, NY | Pioneer Feeders

New York City is the most dense, demanding, and delivery-sensitive metro on our shipping map. Apartment-dwelling reptile keepers running surprisingly sophisticated setups in 600 square feet. Buildings without doormen. UPS access windows that vary block by block. Shipping live feeders to NYC is not like shipping them to a suburb. After years of doing it, we've learned what works and what doesn't, and NYC is now one of our most consistently successful shipping markets.

NYC Has a Real Herp Community

Most people assume the reptile hobby is a suburban thing. NYC is the counter-example. The New York Herpetological Society has been meeting since the early 1900s, one of the oldest herp organizations in the world. White Plains Reptile Expo and NY Metro Reptile Expo pull in vendors and collectors from across the Northeast multiple times a year. Walk into any serious NYC reptile-oriented pet shop and you'll find keepers running high-end bioactive, breeder, and monitor setups in studio apartments. NYC keepers know what they're doing, and they're hard to impress. That's exactly why we work hard on feeder quality for this market.

Shipping From Michigan to NYC

NYC is a 2 to 3 day Ground trip from our facility. Transit is consistent, but UPS package volume in the five boroughs is high, which occasionally adds a day during the holiday season or after a major weather event.

  • UPS Ground: 2 to 3 business days, from $6.67 (not recommended for live feeders to NYC)
  • UPS 2nd Day Air: 2 business days, from $12.81, Live Arrival Guarantee (recommended)
  • UPS Next Day Air: 1 business day, from $24.44, Live Arrival Guarantee

For NYC, we strongly recommend 2nd Day Air or Next Day Air over Ground. The 3-day Ground transit and the volume pressure on NYC UPS terminals mean Ground is the riskiest shipping method to this metro. Not because of our packing, but because of extra handling time.

NYC Delivery Realities (Read This)

If you live in a walk-up without a doorman, a live-feeder box sitting on a Brooklyn stoop for four hours in August will cook. If you live in a secured building without package receiving, your UPS driver may skip the stop. A few NYC-specific tips from our experience:

  • Use a business address if possible. Office, shop, or friend's business. Someone will sign for it.
  • Sign up for UPS My Choice. Schedule your delivery, redirect to an Access Point, or authorize release without a signature.
  • Next Day Air over Ground in summer. July and August NYC heat is brutal for transit, so the extra day of Ground exposure is not worth saving $10.
  • Brooklyn and Queens deliveries occasionally run a day behind Manhattan or the Bronx. Plan accordingly.

Weather: NYC's Two Shipping Risks

NYC has two completely different shipping challenges depending on season. January through early March is cold enough to need heat packs and insulated boxes, but NYC winters are milder than Chicago's, so sustained transit-damaging cold is less common. The real NYC enemy is summer heat-island effect. Asphalt temperatures in Manhattan can push package-in-truck internals north of 130°F. From June through September, every NYC order ships with cool packs, and we recommend Next Day Air for any order over $60 during a heat wave.

What NYC Keepers Order

NYC order mix leans toward small, frequent orders. Apartment-scale reptile rooms rarely buy in bulk, but they reorder often. Bearded dragons and leopard geckos dominate. We also see a distinct NYC pattern of exotic species keepers (chameleons, day geckos, dart frog colonies, and the occasional monitor) who use hornworms and silkworms as variety feeders rather than daily staples.

Wholesale for NYC Reptile Shops

If you operate a reptile-oriented pet or exotics shop anywhere in the five boroughs, Westchester, or northern New Jersey, we can supply you. Because NYC ground transit is slower and the retail demand is high, most NYC wholesale accounts run on a Monday Next Day Air or 2nd Day Air schedule rather than Ground. You pay a bit more in shipping, but your retail cups are on your shelf Tuesday morning, not Thursday afternoon.

NYC FAQ

Should I order Ground to NYC?

Probably not. The extra day of transit exposure in a high-volume UPS network is the single biggest driver of DOA risk on NYC shipments. Pick 2nd Day Air as a default.

What do I do if I'm not home to receive the box?

Use UPS My Choice to redirect to an Access Point (a nearby UPS Store), or ship to your workplace. Do not let a live-feeder box sit on a stoop.

Do you ship to Long Island and New Jersey?

Yes. Long Island, Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, and the Westchester suburbs are all in our regular routes. Transit times are similar to NYC proper.
