Hornworms & Silkworms for Sale Near Charlotte, NC | Pioneer Feeders

Charlotte is one of the fastest-growing reptile markets in the Southeast, and one of the warmer challenges on our shipping map. Mild Carolina winters mean heat packs are rarely the problem. Summer heat is. From June through September, every Charlotte order ships with cool packs, and we recommend expedited service over Ground to shrink the time your feeders spend inside a hot UPS trailer riding down I-77.

The Carolinas Reptile Community

Charlotte anchors one of the most active reptile communities in the Southeast. Between Repticon Charlotte, which rotates into town a couple of times a year, regional herp events that pull in vendors from across the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia, and a growing network of independent reptile shops in Charlotte, Huntersville, Concord, and Fort Mill, the scene has real depth. Bearded dragons, ball pythons, and blue-tongue skinks are dominant in our Charlotte order mix. Warm-climate species for a warm-climate keeper base.

Shipping From Michigan to Charlotte

Charlotte is a 3-day UPS Ground trip, the longest regular Ground route on our domestic shipping map before you start getting into Florida and the Southwest.

  • UPS Ground: 3 business days, from $6.67 (acceptable only in moderate-weather months)
  • UPS 2nd Day Air: 2 business days, from $12.81, Live Arrival Guarantee (recommended)
  • UPS Next Day Air: 1 business day, from $24.44, Live Arrival Guarantee

For Charlotte in summer, we strongly recommend 2nd Day Air or Next Day Air over Ground. A 3-day Ground trip in August through Georgia and the Carolinas is the worst-case scenario for soft-bodied feeders. Not because of our packing, but because of transit time inside hot trailers.

Charlotte Winter: Surprisingly Easy

If you've only kept reptiles in the North, you'll be pleasantly surprised how easy Charlotte winters are for live-feeder shipping. Most of December, January, and February rarely drop below freezing for long stretches, and when they do the cold is short-lived. We still use heat packs on winter Charlotte orders, especially during a January cold snap, but Charlotte is one of the few metros on our map where Ground shipping in January is often fine.

Charlotte Summer: The Actual Problem

Charlotte summer is where shipping gets serious. From June through mid-September, UPS trailer temperatures moving through the Carolinas routinely exceed 110°F, and heat is the single biggest threat to shipment quality in this market. Every Charlotte summer order includes:

  • A reusable cool pack (frozen overnight before packing, not warm)
  • A foam-insulated box to slow thermal transfer
  • Weather-checked scheduling. If the forecast along the I-77 corridor is above 95°F on your ship day, we'll often recommend upgrading to 2nd Day Air or Next Day Air at checkout

Our live arrival record in Charlotte summer is strong, but it's strong because we don't ship Ground in extreme heat, not because we've beaten physics.

What Charlotte Keepers Order

Charlotte orders skew toward bearded dragon keepers with real volume. Beardies are the single most popular beginner-to-intermediate reptile in North Carolina, and hornworms are a cornerstone feeder for them. We ship more jumbo hornworm cups to Charlotte per capita than almost any other metro. Silkworms come second, mostly to keepers running chameleons, day geckos, and specialty breeder colonies.

Wholesale for Charlotte Pet Shops

If you run a reptile specialty shop anywhere from uptown Charlotte out to Gastonia, Rock Hill, Huntersville, or Matthews, we can supply you on a weekly wholesale schedule. Most Charlotte wholesale accounts use Monday 2nd Day Air so the cups land Wednesday morning, allowing two full days to acclimate before the Friday and Saturday retail rush.

Charlotte FAQ

Is Ground OK in summer?

In July and August, no. Pick 2nd Day Air. In June or September on a cooler forecast, Ground can work, but expedited is the safer default.

What about Raleigh and the Triangle?

We ship regularly to Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Greensboro. Same routing logic as Charlotte, so expedited in summer is the safest call.

Do you keep packing materials warm or cold at the warehouse?

Cool packs are frozen before packing. Heat packs are activated at pack-out. Nothing ships at ambient in extreme weather.
